Bharatanatyam, one of India’s oldest classical dance forms, originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu and is celebrated for its grace, storytelling, and intricate footwork. This art form combines dance, music, and drama to express a wide range of emotions through expressive gestures and facial expressions. Since I began my journey in this discipline four years ago, it has not only allowed me to reconnect with my cultural heritage but has also transformed my life. Over the years, I have had the privilege of performing at various events, showcasing the beauty and complexity of Bharatanatyam. As I prepare for the fifth-level Gandharva exams next year, I look forward to further honing my skills and deepening my understanding of this remarkable tradition. Additionally, I will be participating in the Karnataka State Board exams for dance next year, marking a significant milestone in my commitment to this exquisite art form.
I performed my Gejje Pooja in August 2022, a year and a half into my Bharatanatyam training. It was an incredibly emotional and proud moment for me, marking a significant milestone in my dance journey. As I stood before my guru, surrounded by family and friends, I received my anklets, or gejje, which represent a dancer’s commitment and readiness to embrace the responsibilities of mastering this art form. This ceremony deepened my connection to Bharatanatyam and filled me with a sense of achievement, knowing it was just the start of a lifelong journey in dance.
