In the IB Diploma Program, my chosen higher-level subjects—Business Studies, Economics, and AA Math—reflect my academic interests and future university aspirations. I find all three subjects enjoyable and consistently apply what I learn, actively seeking out opportunities beyond the classroom to enhance my understanding.
For my standard-level subjects, I opted for English Language and Literature and Physics. While people often categorize themselves as either “math people” or “English people,” I feel like I embody both. My English class is especially engaging, as we analyze a diverse range of texts, including visual media, which enriches my comprehension of language and meaning. Although I’m not particularly drawn to the sciences, Physics stood out to me among the options available, and it complements my Math AA course, helping me sharpen my analytical abilities.
For my Extended Essay, I chose to examine a controversial Indian filmmaker and the impact of his works. This topic lets me delve into my passion for film while shifting my focus away from my external research in economics and business to explore something equally intriguing within the school setting.
Through the IB's CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) component, I have engaged in various activities that offer a refreshing contrast to the rigorous demands of the IB program. One of my favorite parts of the IB is the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course. The interdisciplinary discussions with my teachers and classmates are intellectually stimulating, encouraging me to think broadly and connect ideas across different subjects. While I sometimes find it challenging to express my thoughts in writing, I thoroughly enjoy the discussions and how TOK has expanded my thinking.
IGCSE Awards: For my success in the June 2023 IGCSE exams, Cambridge Assessment International Education awarded me the High Achievement Award in Business Studies. In addition, I received the Cambridge Scholar Award with Distinction in recognition of my outstanding performance in three or more IGCSE subjects. These honors are a testament to my commitment to academic excellence and my enthusiasm for grasping business principles.
Tulane University Book Award: In addition, I received the prestigious Tulane University Book Award, which honors students for their outstanding academic performance, civic engagement, and leadership. This award is a reflection of my desire to do outstanding work in the classroom as well as to use meaningful projects to give back to my community and school.
During my pre-college programs, I had the chance to explore business, economics, and entrepreneurship in greater depth. At Georgetown University’s pre-college entrepreneurship program, I learned to plan and launch a start-up. The hands-on workshops allowed us to develop business ideas, conduct market research, and create financial models. This experience was invaluable in enhancing my problem-solving abilities and deepening my understanding of business strategies, while highlighting the significance of innovation and adaptability in a competitive environment.
Additionally, I participated in the Columbia pre-college program, which expanded my academic interests by focusing on economic theory. This course introduced me to complex financial concepts like game theory and risk analysis, providing a strong foundation in decision-making and market dynamics. These programs reinforced my passion for economics and business, equipping me with critical thinking and analytical skills for higher education and future career pursuits.
In my research paper titled *The Economic Implications of the Growth of Foreign Luxury Brands in India*, I examined how the rising presence of luxury brands is impacting India’s economic landscape. By analyzing market trends, consumer behavior, and effects on local businesses, I explored how these brands contribute to economic growth, job creation, and changes in consumer spending. This research allowed me to engage deeply with economic theories and their real-world applications, strengthening my passion for economics and enhancing my understanding of global market dynamics.
This topic is particularly meaningful to me because, growing up in India, I've witnessed the rapid transformation of the consumer landscape, especially with the influx of foreign luxury brands. Observing how these global brands have integrated into our economy and influenced consumer behaviors sparked my interest in studying the economic implications of this phenomenon.
Popularized by movies such as "A Beautiful Mind," game theory is the mathematical modeling of strategic interaction among rational (and irrational) agents. Beyond what we call `games' in common language, such as chess, poker, soccer, etc., it includes the modeling of conflict among nations, political campaigns, competition among firms, and trading behavior in markets such as the NYSE. How could you begin to model keyword auctions, and peer to peer file-sharing networks, without accounting for the incentives of the people using them? The course will provide the basics: representing games and strategies, the extensive form (which computer scientists call game trees), Bayesian games (modeling things like auctions), repeated and stochastic games, and more. We'll include a variety of examples including classic games and a few applications.
